How fuel cost is calculated
Fuel needed (litres) = distance in km × L/100 km ÷ 100. Fuel cost = litres × price per litre.
If your economy is in MPG, it is converted to L/100 km first: 235.215 ÷ US MPG, or 282.481 ÷ UK MPG. A price per gallon is converted to a price per litre by dividing by 3.785 (US) or 4.546 (UK).
Example: a 300 km trip at 8 L/100 km uses 24 L. At 2.00 per litre that costs 48.00.
Getting a realistic figure
- Official ratings are measured in lab tests. Real-world use is often 10–25% higher, especially in city traffic.
- Highway driving at high speed, roof racks, towing and air conditioning all raise fuel use.
- For the most accurate number, use your own figure: litres added at a fill-up ÷ km since the last fill-up × 100.
- Not sure which MPG your figure is? US sources use US gallons; UK sources use imperial gallons. Convert it here.
