Using US gallons
L/km = 2.352145833… ÷ MPG
For litres per 100 km, use 235.2145833… ÷ MPG.
2.352145833… ÷ 35 ≈ 0.0672 L/km
That is approximately 6.72 L/100 km.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS
Divide a conversion constant by your MPG.
We keep full precision until the final result.
L/km = 2.352145833… ÷ MPG
For litres per 100 km, use 235.2145833… ÷ MPG.
2.352145833… ÷ 35 ≈ 0.0672 L/km
That is approximately 6.72 L/100 km.
L/km = 2.824809363… ÷ MPG
For litres per 100 km, use 282.4809363… ÷ MPG.
2.824809363… ÷ 35 ≈ 0.0807 L/km
That is approximately 8.07 L/100 km.
How the constants are calculated: litres in one gallon ÷ kilometres in one mile. We use 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 US liquid gallon = 3.785411784 L, and 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L. See NIST unit definitions
A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
L/km measures fuel used to travel one kilometre. L/100 km measures fuel used to travel 100 kilometres. Multiply L/km by 100 to get L/100 km: for example, 0.08 L/km is 8 L/100 km. Both describe fuel consumption; a lower number means less fuel used for the same distance.
For US MPG, divide 2.352145833… by the MPG value. For UK imperial MPG, divide 2.824809363… by the MPG value. For example, 40 US MPG is about 0.0588 L/km, while 40 UK MPG is about 0.0706 L/km.
Choose the gallon standard used in the original fuel economy figure. US vehicle specifications generally use US liquid gallons; UK figures generally use imperial gallons. For an imported car or an international review, check the source rather than choosing based only on where you live.
30 US MPG is approximately 7.84 L/100 km, or 0.0784 L/km. 30 UK imperial MPG is approximately 9.42 L/100 km, or 0.0942 L/km. The gallon standard makes a difference.
Divide 235.2145833… by your L/100 km value for US MPG, or 282.4809363… for UK MPG. For example, 8 L/100 km is approximately 29.40 US MPG or 35.31 UK MPG. To convert directly from L/km, use 2.352145833… or 2.824809363… instead.
Yes, when comparing the same gallon standard: higher MPG means more distance travelled per gallon. Litres per kilometre works the other way around, so lower L/km means less fuel consumed. Actual fuel use also depends on driving conditions, load and the vehicle.
No. A UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785 litres, so the same car shows a higher MPG figure in UK gallons. Multiply US MPG by 1.201 to get UK MPG, or divide UK MPG by 1.201 to get US MPG. For example, 30 US MPG is about 36 UK MPG.
As a rough guide for cars, under 6 L/100 km is very good, 6 to 8 is good to average, 8 to 10.5 is average to thirsty, and above 10.5 is thirsty. Hybrids and small cars often manage under 5 L/100 km; large SUVs, utes and pickups often use 11 or more.
